Larry Crabb Men of Courage
Revisiting “The Silence of Adam” by Larry Crabb
“Most men are known for their silence.” This sentence struck me as brutally true. Modeling after our ancestor Adam, our default setting as men can be silence in the face of trials and difficulties. In his book “Men of Courage”, Dr. Larry Crabb encourages men to step into “God’s call to move beyond the silence of Adam.”
I read this book in college when it was titled, “The Silence of Adam”, and remember clear takeaways for me in the ways that I am silent amidst the temptations of Satan. God is calling me to speak truths into this world. As Jesus described His calling in John 18,
“For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”” (John 18:37, ESV)
This past semester our three Navigator staff men here at Clemson read through this book together. I think I highlighted a solid quarter of the book as it challenged us that to follow God is to move with courage into the chaos of life.
Chaos and darkness in our lives will be ever present in this world. But God is equipping us by His Word and Spirit to move into the darkness.
One of the bigger highlights for me was three messages that Fathers must pass on to their sons:
You are not alone.
I believe in you.
It can be done.
These are messages I’ve sought to impart to the young men I disciple. Satan wants them to believe they are lone. He instills fear and doubt in them as to whether they are capable of following and obeying God in this life. And with so many negative examples around them, Satan can lead them to believe that living the life that God desires is not possible. I made a video for my YouTube channel that I’ll post below evaluating these three messages for Fathers.
VidAngel promises to clean up our media content. But should Christians consume content that exploits actors and actresses even if we skip over those scenes?
